“Hairdressers are lending their hands so the story of Katrina is never forgotten.”

That’s why our good friends at Moda Salon, Spa Yoga Center (Fort Worth) are hosting a hair and fashion show at the Ridglea Theater, May 11, in an effort to help support the work of Hair Dressers Unlocking Hope, an advocacy group founded by Vidal Sassoon in partnership with Habitat for Humanity (and a league of like-minded proponents).

Now an industry mogul, Sassoon himself was homeless as a young boy, forced to live six years in an orphanage before reuniting with his mother. They were eventually given a home of their own, care of the England’s reconstruction programs following World War II.

Hair Dressers Unlocking Hope collected the keys to several New Orleans homes, many no longer standing, and paired them with the testimonies of their former occupants to raise awareness of the ongoing plight still impacting thousands of displaced Gulf Coast residents today, almost three years after Hurricane Katrina. Some of the stories have been married with photo portraits featuring some of the world’s most influential celebrity and industry stylists.

Check out the Hair Dressers Unlocking Hope site for the stories, photos, sponsors, and more information.

For a moment, classical music transcended the boundaries of the political impasses of two Super Powers. It was at the height of the Cold War, the competition’s judges reportedly asked Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev if they could really give first place to an American.

Khrushchev replied, “Is he the best piano player? Then give it to him.”
